The Hits Just Keep On Coming.... :-(

I swear that I’ll have some good Kyle news to share with you all soon…but… not today…  🙁

Remember a few weeks back when I wrote that Kyle almost passed out at school because he likes to hold his breath.

Well they collected some data at school and under 3 different scenarios Kyle held his breath over 300 times in a half hour!

Everybody is very freaked out about this… No ones ever heard of it before… And no one is sure what to do…

We gave that info to Kyle’s pediatrician and DAN doctor…

The first thing they recommended?  Getting our house tested for mold.

After that, going for an overnight sleep study.

After that, we’ll probably be down another road of dr visits for other solutions.

And after countless hours and THOUSANDS of dollars, all the results will turn up fine / negative.   I HATE when results come back fine!  I want answers!

But  we’ll probably have no answers and probably need to turn to drugs…?    🙁

I’m a 48 year old neurotypical dad with a 14 year old son with severe, non-verbal autism & epilepsy. I created this blog to rant about autism & epilepsy while celebrating my son who I affectionately call “the king” :-).

Perhaps a stim or he is doing it because it is something HE can control. My son likes to have decisions he can make (nonverbal ASD) and a day in class where they constantly guide him, then therapy where he is constantly directed, they can get these OCD type habits because it is something they can just decide to do, when they want to do it. We did not have breath holding (yet) but we do have "knocking things off the desk or table, one by one, till they are on the floor". He figured out that doing this he can zone out of the lesson, and then the person working with him has to break and make him pick it up, with a smile on his face. So he has some sense of control. Maybe breath holding is a stim and also a sense of something HE controls himself whenever he wants. Not a professional therapist here, just a mom of a noverbal ASD 9 year old who agrees with every blog you ever wrote! 🙂 That is my thought on the matter. Thanks Autism Daddy for making me feel like I am not the only one dealing every day.

I know you posted this awhile back. But I visited a horse ranch awhile back and these horses had this weird looking thing around their neck. When I asked what it was the Rancher said it was to keep the horses from grabbing hold of the iron bar with their mouth and holding their breath to get a high. Maybe he likes the dizzy feeling you get when holding your breath and using it as a stim?

maby something doesnt smell good to him? maby he likes the attention he gets when he does this?does he only do it at school? does he do it when he eats? does he do it while whatching tv? does he do it to avoid doing certain tasks at school? Maby give him a lollypop to suck on or something else to side track him from the breathing. My heart goes out to you guys.
