I’m a 48 year old neurotypical dad with a 14 year old son with severe, non-verbal autism & epilepsy. I created this blog to rant about autism & epilepsy while celebrating my son who I affectionately call “the king” :-).

Love u!!! as a grandma of an autistic grandson I so can relate to u. I know it's not supposed to b funny but u crack me up, I can so relate to the issues you and your wife are dealing, with the good, the bad, and the ugly. I am always there for his parents cuz it's an exhausting life. I pick him up from school at least 1 day a week for an overnighter, and take him on the weekend if they have plans just to give them a break. it's not like they can call the girl next door to babysit, not only could her life be in danger but he just might take a screen off and walk out a second story window (no fear) I feel it's the least I can do for them that is as long as I can still run and catch him. keep up the good work:>)

  3. Have you read Ido in Autismland which is written by a non-verbal autistic who communicates through spelling? Would you consider teaching Kyle communication through RPM (Ido's method) or FC?

  4. Jenelle Butterworth

Do you think Kyle was born with Autism?

    1. Yeah. I have Aspergers — it's not like I suddenly decided, oh I think I'll have an Autism Spectrum Disorder, for the rest of my life.

      Wayno

I don't mean to get religious, but do you think there will come a day that you will know the 'real'' Kyle, not the mortal autistic Kyle?

  6. I know from your many blog posts that Kyle is a picky eater. My question is: Is he on any special diets such as GFCF, etc.? If so, have you seen any improvements in any area?

It seems like you have very supportive community around. How do you built such a strong support system? Not family, but friends who are accepting? Understanding? Where do I seek more sn parents? I just heard today from one of the closest sn parents that I "babysit" my child too much:( thank you, Yvonne.

  8. My Non verbal daughter is starting special ed pre k at our local school system. Did you fear abuse of any kind and do you think you would know if abuse was happening? How did Kyle adjust?

  9. Anne Catapano

Have you tried or plan to try communication apps on the King's IPad. My "king" (who is also non-verbal) is 7 and has been evaluated at school and we were told to wait on them.

  10. Would it be far off to say that autistic personae are in the last incarnation of their soul? That they have a sort of enlightenment and are set free of our daily struggles. Just something I thought I heard Master Osho say. I believe.
