A Nice Little "Moment" From This Afternoon…

File this one under celebrating the little things…

The wife reported a nice “moment” with the king today.

It was after school.

The king was playing in his playroom.

The weather was nice out so wifey said “Kyle let’s go in the backyard and jump on the trampoline & go on the swing.”

And she proceeded to begin to get him dressed.

As she was putting his shoes on and grabbing his coat, he ran away from her, sat down in the corner nook in his playroom, and slammed his hand down as if to say “I don’t want to go outside! I want to stay right here!”

It took the wife a second to comprehend that he was, in his own “terrible two’s” kinda way, actually communicating with her.

But once it dawned on her she said, “Oh, ok buddy we don’t have to go outside. Thanks for telling mommy what you want. Great communicating!”

And they stayed inside and he continued played in his nook.

That’s a pretty big moment for his majesty because it was absolutely positively clear to wifey that he was reacting to the concept of putting his shoes & coat on.

He must’ve made the connection that shoes & coat mean outside and thought I want to stay here.

And he let her know his desires…loud & clear.

Doesn’t sound like much for an almost 10 year old, but for Kyle it’s kinda big…

A nice little Thursday afternoon “moment” in the ol’ Autism Daddy household.

I’m a 48 year old neurotypical dad with a 14 year old son with severe, non-verbal autism & epilepsy. I created this blog to rant about autism & epilepsy while celebrating my son who I affectionately call “the king” :-).

  1. Communication is communication is communication is communication. Yay for y'all! I remember the days of getting bitten in the thigh as that was the only way kiddo was sure I'd understand him.

  2. I think it's FREAKIN AWESOME! Way to go Kyle! Careful Dad, next he'll be "telling" you he wants a new car!

  3. I love reading your Facebook posts/blog. A mutual friend introduced me to your writing and you've got a great writing style and talent that pulls me in! My daughter is at the opposite end of the spectrum. Her cognitive abilities are super sharp that it scares me. She is at times emotionally and physically violent. Her game is to provoke reaction of any type and she gets off on heated, escalating power struggles. To top it off she invites and encourages my husband and I to punish her and no punishment is harsh enough she tells us. She has trouble socially of course and she communicates in her own way which took me years to figure out. She is indirectly saying something else most of the time when she is communicating with us.
She is hypersensitive to sound and touch both with tactile and food. She finds comfort in repetition and routine. I too, would, and still fantasize about having had a typical childhood for her, (she is now 12). I mourn not having had that with her since she is not typical and does not do the typical kid things. I have a younger daughter which I almost didn't have since the first one was so extreme. My younger daughter (8) also has not had a typical childhood as a result of her sister. She is scared of her sister. Anyway, I can't tell you how much I get from your posts and blogs. We do not have the same situation but we both have unique situations that set us apart from the typical world and it feels good to know that there are others in that Autism boat with me.
