This is the type of school they are sending us to?



So today was supposed to be Kyle's first day of school but because of a series of events that I will detail when the dust settles he was home and currently does not have a proper placement. The school district for months have been trying to get us to visit this school that we know is TOTALLY inappropriate for Kyle, and we've resisted on those grounds...but on the advice of our legal counsel (yep :-) we were told to tour the school and have them evaluate Kyle so we can show our district that we've been compliant. So the wife calls the school to say we want to see the school this afternoon. The woman says "you can come at 1:15pm today but it you'd see a lot more and get a better feel for the school if you came around 10am tomorrow". The wife asked what the difference between being there at 10am vs 1:15pm was. The woman says "well at 10am you could see the students working on math, social studies, reading...". The wife says "uh Kyle is non-verbal and can barely identify his shapes..."

This is the type of school they are sending us to... Do they even read the IEP's and reports they are sending out? WTF??

....and the drama continues... to be continued

  1. Crazy!! I know, I have 2 on different sides of the spectrum, Jake is completely non-verbal and Kyle is high functioning, Jake is in a completely appropriate placement and I have always been happy with it, when Kyle was ready to move up from pre-school, the woman at his CSE says "we can put him in Jake's school, it will be so much easier for you, one bus"!! My head almost flew off of my neck, I said are you crazy??? I really don't think they read the IEP's sometimes!! But no placement on the first day of school....definately unacceptable!! Time off is hard enough for kids like that.

  2. My niece has cerebral palsy and she goes to a school where they have all the main subjects, reading, etc and even gets homework. Their explanation is that at least she is being challanged, she also does not talk, identify shapes, etc. They claim it is better than to have her just playing all day or watching TV.

I agree, they always go with the "least restrictive" which is fine, but, I would rather my Jake be appropriately placed, because I feel they are best equipped to deal with his particular problems, like toilet-training at an advanced age, they did a great job last year (at 10 years old) of getting him to go on the toilet and wear underwear all day during the school day! Daily living skills, that's what he needs, not history!

  4. I totally agree, my son went to a special school but they still used the national curriculum. Whats the point, he will never need history geography or even French!It would be so nice to have a conversation in english. He is so lacking in both life & social skills but was told he would have to access the 24hr curriculum to address those.
